VooDoo Floss Bands
Voodoo Floss Bands are a new twist on a traditional technique of self-myofascial release (SMR). This technique is beneficial for anyone experiencing pain and impaired biomechanics secondary to tight muscles, fascia or scar tissue surrounding a joint. Using a large rubber band tightly wrapped around a joint or muscle, then combined with bringing the treatment area through it’s full range of motion or better known as “flossing” for several minutes, before the band is then removed allowing a rush of new blood to perfuse the treatment area. Outcomes include improved range of motion, decreased pain, and subsequent rebound vasodilation which increases local oxygenated blood circulation, thereby promoting healing and mobility.
The term “voodoo” was coined due to the lack of empirical evidence supporting or negating the efficacy. It is hypothesized that a neuro-physiological response occurs during the flossing maneuver, resulting in decreased muscle tone and tension. It is also hypothesized that the process of flossing under the compressive force applied by the tightly wrapped bands helps break down adhesions and scar tissue in muscles, tendons and fascia, thereby improving pain and mobility. Another proposed theory is that the shearing sensation is created by the compression holding the superficial myofascial layer in place, while the flossing motion mobilizes the deeper layers, breaking the layers apart.
No matter the scientific rationale, Voodoo Floss Bands have been seen to be effective in decreasing pain and increase both mobility and function.
